About SIN & SUFFER

“Some say the past is in the past. That vengeance will hurt both innocent and guilty. I never believed those lies. Once my lust for revenge is sated, I’ll say goodbye to hatred. I’ll find a new beginning.”

She came from a past Arthur “Kill” Killian never forgot. She made him sin and made him suffer. She tugged him from the shadows and showed him he wasn’t as dead as he thought. And with her resurrection came betrayal, deceit, and war.

But then they took her. Stole her. Imprisoned her.

Now Kill’s carefully laid plans for vengeance are complete. He craves action, retribution-the blood of his enemies. War has begun. War is all they’ll know until they’ve paid their penance. He will get her back-and rewrite their destiny . . .

Q&A with Pepper Winters

1. What would readers be surprised to find out about you?
That I’m really not that interesting J Um…not sure…let’s see. I don’t like tomatoes. That’s a random fact.

2. Tell us about your writing process. Do you start with an idea or a character? Do you know what’s going to happen from the beginning or do you figure it out as you write?
I have a vague plot line and character script but as I get to know the people I’m writing and the story arc, it normally always changes. It’s great to see characters take control and guide me in a different direction.

3. Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?
Not particularly spoken piece of advice, but I do remember reading Laini Taylor’s work and ‘clicking’ with her beautiful writing. That was the day I found my voice.

4. Is there one thing you have to have when writing?
Yes, a glass of icy cold Coke Zero and lots of water.

5. How did you choose the names of your characters?
I let them choose. I might have place holders in for a while until it comes to me, or browse on baby websites until something clicks.

6. How has music played a role in your life and in your writing?
Not at all. I have to have complete silence to write. But I love the way some lyrics can tell the soul of my story and list those in the playlists at the back of my work.

7. When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?
When I was about six years old and I wrote a story in my school book that was meant to be math homework.

8. What can you tell us about your couple, that we won’t find in the book?
Oh, not sure. What sort of stuff do you want to know? I guess, you won’t find their generic everyday likes and dislikes. For example, Kill loves coffee black.

9. Do you have any favorite book boyfriends of your own?
I have too many to count. It wouldn’t be fair to list in case I miss one.

10. What are five books on your night stand/bookshelf?
Boring ones. I have The Secret, Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad) Napoleon Hill (Think Rich) and a renovation guide to large homes.

11. What’s your favorite quote or scene from your books?
That’s like choosing a favourite child. There are many but I love the scene in the shower with Tess and Q in Monsters in the Dark.

12. If your couple’s relationship had a theme song, what would it be?
Um, again, I’m not sure. Their emotional growth encaptures so many theme songs J I kinda suck at this, I know.

13. Tell us about the cover process. Is this what you had in mind?
Yes, completely. I love an artist that can pluck the idea from your head and make it a reality.

14. If your book was being made into a movie, who would you include in your dream cast? I’m going to suck on this question too. I honestly don’t know. My characters are unique in my head, so I don’t see them as anyone else. I know if it was ever made into a movie though, whoever was cast would do a great job.

15. Where do you find inspiration for you writing? Do you use real people/places as a foundation? Yes and no. I tend to get random plot ideas while driving or in the shower. I don’t really use outside influences but let the character guide me to the next chapter etc.

16. Do you have any hobbies or activities that you enjoy outside of writing? Yes, buying real estate and travelling.

17. Would the 10 year-old version of yourself kick your butt or praise you for what you’ve accomplished in life? Praise me. I think I’ve been very lucky and happy with my life so far.

Excerpt

“Let’s go.” Mo cocked his head at the undergrowth. “The sooner this is over, the sooner we can blow some shit up and get home.”
I tried to hide my slight sway and the way even the darkness hurt my eyes. But of course, he saw right through it.
Mo came closer. “You’re the prez, Kill. You’re the one pulling the strings on this party. But tonight, let us be the ones in front, yeah?”
Grasshopper froze. I was well known for being on the front line. I never asked others to do what I was afraid to do myself. I shook my head, then stopped immediately.
Motherfucker, that hurts.
Swallowing my groan, my shoulders slumped. “Normally, I’d take a swing at you for sprouting such bullshit. But . . . you might be right.”
Honesty was a weakness, but it was also a strength. My men trusted me because I wasn’t stupid. If they had a better idea, I listened. If they had reasons to avoid something, I paid attention.
And this was one of those times.
Grasshopper’s boots crunched a twig as he shifted. “You’re still the boss. We aren’t protecting you or doing shit on your behalf; you’re just doing us a favor by not getting in the way.”
As if anyone believes that shit.
“We’ll get her back, dude. And we’ll destroy those motherfuckers.” Grasshopper slapped a hand on my shoulder.
I winced as my headache flared, but I appreciated the gesture. Fuck, I appreciated everything he’d done—even if I was livid.
I owed him.
If it hadn’t have been for Hopper, I might’ve bled out or turned into a damn zucchini before anyone noticed. He’d been the one to pop around when he couldn’t get me on the phone. He was the one who found me passed out.
Mo pulled his gun free and clicked off the safety. “Let’s go.” Like an evil spirit, he dissolved into the tree line.
Grasshopper took off after him, leaving me to bring up the rear—like a rookie or some idiotic prospect.
The trees were watchdogs.
The shadows were death’s pockets to hide in.
We remained silent as we merged with the darkness, slinking stealthily through leaves and cobwebs.
Every step throbbed my head.
Every duck to avoid branches sent queasiness splashing through my skull.
Cleo was nearby and we were about to rescue her.
That was all the incentive I needed to do my fucking job as a Pure Corruption president and lover to my woman.
I’m stronger than a damn concussion.
However, the closer we got to the large wooden fence barricading Dagger Rose, the more I feared I might not be a help but a hindrance. Mo was right to put me at the back. My muscles trembled and the cold sweat of illness never let up. I could barely stomach the pain of walking, let alone running into battle and firing a loud gun.
Shit.
Moving past the glade where I’d brought Cleo, my fists tightened as I recalled her peering through the hole in the fence and witnessing her old home.
It hurt like hell that she couldn’t remember everything we’d shared, but at the same time, I was glad. Glad that she couldn’t recall the night we both lost everything.
My stomach convulsed as a rancid thought crusted my mind.
She’ll know.
She’ll remember what I did.
My father would’ve had ample time to tell her what happened. To show her the false statement and guild lies into truths.
Everything he said would reek of dishonesty—but one fact remained.
One undisputed fact that would make her hate me for eternity.
What I did was unforgivable.
I was the one who pulled the trigger.
I was the one to slaughter the two people she cared for most in this world.
How can she ever forgive me once she knows?

Kara’s Review…

Anguish. Pain. Pleasure. Release. Its an understatement to say I fell in love with Q and Tess in ToT and again in QQ. My heart and stomach went through blow after blow. I felt like I was standing in gusts of winds so powerful it left me breathless. Q and Tess’ soul-deep connection gave me chills. The emotions they experienced were raw, dark, and real given their experiences and their desires. I couldn’t tear my eyes away yet I needed breaks with how powerful I was moved and the heart stomping intensity of scenes had me feeling suffocated. I hate for their story to end. How it ended was beautiful and fitting for them and their journey. This dark, sensual, gentle, painful ride left me feeling high and encompassed all I look for in art. It moved me, I was with them in their locations, I was connected and will be for a long time. Q and Tess’ friends have also grown into my heart and I would love to see how Suzette and Franco make out in their journey (pun intended). I’ll be feeling this for a long time. Give this a try and find your next crush!! Rating: 5 stars

Caryn’s Review…

A love story so dark, so raw, so edgy, so epic, and so perfectly Twisted Together, it’s almost impossible to know, to feel, where Q ends and Tess begins. A love between two people so fierce, so powerful it radiates off the pages and burns your soul. ~ Q ~ “You and me. We need this.”
~ Q ~ “I’m going to have to make you believe in order to make you free. Do you understand? Everything I do, even if I lose myself along the way, remember I love you so f***ing much. I’m doing this for you.”
Q and Tess fight with such passion and ferocity to lay their demons to rest no matter the sacrifice. ~ Q ~ “When it takes you, don’t fight. I’ll keep you safe.”
Two lovers, so conflicted, each feel undeserving of the other, yet their chemistry, a bond, a love so powerful, nothing will separate them in this life or the next.
~ Q ~ “This was my burden. I was the reason she was broken. I was the reason she’d lost so much. And I was the only one who could bring her back. And I had to do it before….”
Twisted Together is a love story so dark, so beautiful, and perfectly written with characters so intoxicating you will effortlessly get swept away in all that is Q and Tess. A perfect end to an epic love story.
~ 5 ~ You’re my monster in the dark ~ Stars!!

Excerpt

Q no longer looked devilish but royal.
My heart flew free, fluttering to the ceiling.
“Donne-moi tes mains.” Give me your hands. The order whispered through the golden light, quintessentially him. His raspy, melodic voice had a power over me he wasn’t aware of. I instantly locked my wrists together, jutting them toward him.
Q didn’t say a word as he accepted my gift, wrapping soft, black fabric around me. The silk looked like morbid blood, as if I’d slashed my wrists in a fit of insanity.
The moment he’d restrained me, Q tugged the cord, making me stretch even further across the table, securing it somehow. Once tied, he strolled back toward me, setting my heart jumping and body dissolving under his intense stare.
My back was icy cold while my front was toasty warm. The two sensations, coupled with my lack of mobility, made my lungs suck in air as if oxygen was about to go extinct. The closer Q came, the more lightheaded and woozy I was.
I flinched as he cupped my ass.
“What are you going to do?” I didn’t bother testing the binds. I knew Q—he had a way with ropes—there would be no chance of escape.
“Sometimes, the only way to make your dreams come true is to shatter them,” he said, circling me like a predator. “Sometimes, the only way to make your nightmares disappear is by facing them.”

Review

When I picked up Tears of Tess, I was deep in a book rut. Nothing appealed and it all seemed the same story over and over.
This book was dark and cavernous. Pepper Winters nailed the plot theme. Her writing was exceptional and filled with raw emotion. Reading Tears of Tess was both traumatic and yet I was drawn to the darkness. Instinct and survival.
The character development was phenomenal but left me wanting more. The characters were complex and I am still not sure if I understand the depth of their brokenness. But together they were able to become accepting of their different desires.
Tess was filled with fight for her life rage, which is how a character dealing with this subject theme should be written. Tess fought at every opportunity and she never gave up her will for freedom.
The descriptions of the places in the story were vivid leaving a sense of feeling that I could visually see the scene. Some scenes were brutal, disturbing and so real!
Q – I can’t even describe him, but he makes the book. He is an enigma and he is so layered and unexpected.
The pace of this story kept me on the edge of my seat and I fought hard against putting this book down. Again, if you are looking for something simple and romantic, keep looking. But if you want a unique, fascinating story that will have your emotions blasting off and plummeting at break neck speed while having you cringe and your heart racing this is a book you have to try. Thankfully there is a sequel Quintessentially Q because I’m sure most readers will need more! 5.0 Stars

Author Spotlight ~ Pepper Winters

Book Crush is honored to be featuring an author who Blew. Us. Away. Get ready for a new crush. Meet Pepper Winters. **Be sure to enter the giveaway!!**

Book Crush: What were your biggest challenges in bringing your stories to life?
Pepper Winters: Probably getting to know my characters better before I start to write. I have a bad habit of writing a LOT that I delete but I find it helps me know the character deeper, but it’s heartbreaking to delete.

BC: What is the hardest thing about writing?
PW: Probably my answer above. But also the distraction of Facebook and online, and I also find it’s hard not to compare yourself to other amazing authors and I have to learn to accept that my journey is my own and everyone is different.

BC: What does your writing process look like?
PW: I get an idea and I make a note in my notebook. I then flesh out the plot with a map on where it could go. Then I start writing. My loose plot gets changed a lot along the way and it’s always exciting to see where a character will lead it.

BC: What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
PW: Um… I always have to have a glass of Coke Zero for my caffeine hit. I don’t really have too many other quirks apart from deleting a bunch of words from every book.

BC: Do you ever get writer’s block?
PW: Yes. I just either start a new concept that I’m excited about or go on FB or read a book

BC: What do you do when you’re not writing?
PW: I’m either with hubby, travelling, or lying in the sun reading. To be honest I don’t have a lot of free time these days as I complete a lot of books.

BC: What inspires you?
PW: Everything and anything  I get inspiration from all things and stories pop up from nowhere

BC: Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?
PW: I actually suck at writing sex scenes. But I keep going over and over my work to make sure everything works so eventually I get sick of every scene. lol

BC: What is your biggest writing weakness?
PW: I hate passive writing. On my final draft I go through and delete every heard, felt, saw that I can. I find it makes my writing a lot stronger.

BC: What is your biggest writing strength?
PW: Probably description. I might go a bit overboard sometimes lol

BC: Of all your books, what was your favorite chapter or part to write and why?
PW: Um, yes my favourite chapter in Tears of Tess was the sex scene in Q’s POV at the end.

BC: My favourite chapter in Quintessentially Q was the helicopter scene.
PW: And my favourite chapter in Destroyed is when Fox meets someone who I won’t say

BC: Of all your books, what was the hardest chapter or part to write and why?
PW: Um, probably a lot of the abduction scenes with Tess. Mainly because I had to get into the head space of intense pain and hopelessness.

BC: If you gave one of your characters an opportunity to speak for themselves, what would they say?
PW: I’d say Q has the most to say but he wouldn’t say anything at all that was personal as he’s incredibly closed off about his private affairs

BC: If your books were made into a movie ~ which actor/actress do you see playing:
PW: I would love to answer this question but I have NO idea. If anyone can help on this one that would be great!

BC: What are your thoughts overall on reviews good or bad?
PW: When the book is first released I read the ones on Amazon to get a taste of how the market perceives it. However, I learned a hard lesson from Goodreads when I first published and my fragile heart can’t stand it. I only go on GR is someone links me their review or I filter. I appreciate every single review, good or bad though.

BC: What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
PW: Um, good question. Toughest criticism was the fact that Tears of Tess wasn’t dark enough and I was judged on that instead of the actual book. Best compliment would be the multitude of messages I receive from women saying they found the strength to approach their hubbies and ask for more in the bedroom. I love those messages

BC: What books have influenced your life most?
PW: Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone helped me find my voice as an author. I will always love her style.

BC: If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor and why?
PW: Probably Laini

BC: Name an entity that you feel supported you outside of your family
PW: Oh, not sure. Just the universe. I’m a firm believer in The Secret.

BC: Do you read much and if so, who are your favorite authors?
PW: Yes I read a lot. I don’t have favourite authors but I LOVE every single book and genre.

BC: What do you think makes a good story?
PW: Anything with a good connection between the characters. I don’t care if it’s sci-fi or contemporary as long as I feel the story.

BC: When choosing a book to read, what do you look for? What grabs you?
PW: Mainly recommendations I suppose. Or a pretty cover.

BC: Favorite motivational quote?
PW: Um, love turns the impossible into possible.

BC: Favorite positive saying?
PW: Your dreams are lifes previews to coming attractions.

BC: As a writer, what is your biggest fear?
PW: That people won’t like my work. That it will flop.

BC: What are 4 things you never leave home without?
PW: My tablet, My notebook, Cellphone, Waterbottle

BC: Laptop or desktop for writing?
PW: Laptop

BC: Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
PW: Anytime works. I would love to be around a pool in some fancy hotel but alas I write in my lounge.

BC: If you had to describe yourself using 3 words, it would be…
PW: Ambitious, Perfectionist, Hard worker

BC: What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
PW: My laptop

BC: Favorite song(s)?
PW: Demons by Imagine Dragons

BC: What do you hope a reader will take away from your writing?
PW: A story that made them FEEL.

BC: Do you have anything specific you’d like to say to your readers?
PW: Just thank you so much for all their amazing support and love for my work. I’m blown away on a daily basis and love them so much.

BC: Do you have anything specific you’d like to say to the bloggers?
PW: A MASSIVE thank you for pimping me, reviewing, and being so amazingly awesome. I couldn’t deliver my books into as many readers hands without them.

DESTROYED

She has a secret.
I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.
I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn’t realized how far I could fall or what I’d do to get free.
He has a secret.
I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.
I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.
One secret destroys them.

He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.

Review

Two words…..
Love: The most spectacular, indescribable, deep, euphoric, unconditional acceptance of someone.
Hate: An intense dislike; an elevated level of anger; an unnatural emotion of inexplicable temper.
I both loved and hated Q with an ever burning passion.
I’m speechless, blown away, and truth be told ~ I’m in love with a dark, erotic, feral, possessive, FICTIONAL man! I’m drawn to him. I’m captivated by him. I’m borderline obsessed with all things Q. Tears of Tess and Quintessentially Q are two of the most emotionally intense, soul piercing, dark, carnal, and dangerous , yet one of the most hauntingly beautiful stories I’ve ever read. Two stories so dark, so tormenting, so captivating and so intense, about the lengths one goes to, the willingness to sacrifice everything for love that it will shatter your soul, yet slowly piece it back together and leave you breathless with the beauty of the journey. Two ABSOLUTE must, must reads, flawlessly written. A breath taking journey that will stay with you and have you achingly desperate for more. ~ 5 ~Haunting ~ Beautiful ~ Stars……..but is worthy of so many more!!
