Don’t forget to enter for your chance to win!!!
Who designed the cover? What was involved in coming up with the cover design? What does it mean to you?
David Goldhahn designed the beautiful cover! Dave was very patient with me as I changed my mind a million times! I was getting frustrated, because I couldn’t find the right picture.
One day I was searching till 3 am in the morning, determined to find the right picture and that’s when I found the model on the cover! Her eyes were a very light green and I thought how much she reminded me of Mia! Dave worked his magic on the eyes to match what I pictured Mia’s were. At first the cover was only going to be just her eyes, and in each pupil have an image that signified Marcus’ two sides. But it turned out when he sent me a few drafts this was the one I fell in love with. It was just so Mia and since it was her story I thought it would be perfect.
What’s next? What are you working on?
I’m currently working on two books at the same time. Cautious, which is the second book in the Disastrous series. I’m getting really into this story, because I have fallen in love with my characters. Marcus and Mia are my babies. I love them so much and I feel for them! When they hurt I hurt, when they cry I cry! LOL, I know it’s silly! I’m also thinking of maybe doing a spinoff after Marcus and Mia’s story to have a story for Jimmie DeLuca (Marcus’ brother). That’s just in the air for the moment.
The other book is a stand-alone. This book is bugging me to write it! I’m not fully committed to it yet, but I do jot down scenes when it pops in my head. I’m not certain if I’m ready to share any detail just yet, because it might not go anywhere.
Was Disastrous your first/debut novel? What does it feel like to have it out there in the world?
Yes, Disastrous is my first/debut novel. There are so many feelings you have when you put your work out there to the world. Excitement, nerves, embarrassment, everything! I still get embarrassed and nervous when just posting up teasers. You’re worried of what so many will think of you as a writer.
How did you decide to self-publish?
By reading other self-published authors work. I fell in love with so many books and once I realized that they were indie authors I thought to give it a shot.
What inspired this story?
I was in the middle of writing another story that was taking me forever to write. I was not into it. It was a love triangle and something about it just didn’t click. One day I was watching TV with the hubby, and while thinking of my book, a commercial came on for an old movie. The movie basically is what Marcus’ second life is. My husband said “You know they’re due for another movie like this.” I agreed and then thought to myself, can you imagine meeting a guy, falling in love with him and then to find out he lives this second, dark life. I ran to my laptop and couldn’t stop writing.
What was your writing process?
Work, write, work, write, work, write. Sleep for 2 hours, then work and write. Every day I would attend work for 8 long hours and all I thought about was my characters, then went home to write. I didn’t cook or clean…all I did was write. I closed myself from my husband, family and friends, and I apologized to them a million times…but it was something that I wanted to do and I couldn’t stop until I was completely finished.
Did you have a soundtrack in your mind or music you listened to, to go along with your writing?
OMG Yes! I listened to a lot of music, especially while commuting back and forth from work. The entire drive I’ll play music and sometimes specific songs on repeat and I actually imagined and pictured certain scenes. Tension between the characters, the angst, and the love… all of it played in my head while listening to a certain song and I would run home and write.
What inspires your creativity?
Music, TV, actual reality, I can listen to one song and come up with so many scenes in my head by listening and understanding the words. I can watch a movie or show and one scene in that movie/show will give me an idea for an entire book. I can witness everyday life with someone that screws up, makes mistakes, laugh, and cry EVERYTHING inspires me.
Do you have a blog or website?
No! But I will very, very soon. David Goldhahn who worked on my cover is designing my website and I love it so far. I’m hoping within the next couple of weeks. I have purchased the domain its www.BOOKSBYELMONTES.com I’m excited about it. 😉
What has been your biggest surprise since releasing Disastrous? What has been your biggest disappointment?
My biggest surprise is the feedback! OMG! I can’t tell you how many emails, private messages, and posts I’ve received by so many readers of how much they loved Disastrous! Gah! I get so overwhelmed with happiness that others actually fell in love with Marcus and Mia’s story! I’m SO grateful and honored to have such a supporting and loving fan base! I love each and every one of them and I have not only gained fans but wonderful and beautiful friends as well!
My biggest disappointment would be some of the gut ugly reviews.
What is your take on the reviews, feedback etc that you’ve received?
I know that everyone has their own opinion and you will never please everyone. I’m not going to lie the first weekend Disastrous was released and when I seen my first few one/two star reviews I was heartbroken. Not by the rate, but by the words of the review. It was just downright ugly.
I recently read one review where the reader gave Disastrous two stars and she wrote that: she didn’t connect with the characters or the story. That a lot of her friends read it and loved it but it just wasn’t for her. She also recommended others to still read it to give their own opinion. I wanted to give her a round of applause! That’s how you should write a review when you don’t like a story.
I wanted to contact her and give her a sign book…but I’m sure she wouldn’t want it since she didn’t like it very much! LOL! What I’m trying to say, is I get it…I’m not going to get the perfect five or four stars and I’m COMPLETELY fine with that…it’s okay to be honest in a review. This is how authors learn to better their writing. Just don’t bash the author and their hard work.
Tell me about Marcus and Mia – what makes them tick, how did you imagine them? Did you have a visual reference?
Marcus, Marcus, Marcus…I wanted an Alpha male that wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable around the women he loves. Even though he has a supporting loving family, he felt alone. He needed Mia more than he knew and once his feelings hit, it hit so hard he couldn’t control them. Marcus has so many personalities, now that I think about it. He’s cold one minute, hot the next, warm the other minute. You could never tell what he’s thinking, he’s like a lost boy trapped in a tall, Italian hot man’s body. Hehehe
Mia, I love her and I don’t care what anyone says! I wanted her to be this strong, independent woman, but even the strongest women are weak at times. She will never admit it but she’s fragile, she puts on a hard show so no one could see…but Marcus see’s it!
Even though their relationship happened quickly…they are perfect for each other in a weird, love/hate relationship way. They are so different but SO much alike…does that make sense? Well they’ve been through so much, they do deserve a happy ending…I hope they get it in Cautious. :-/
What was your process for writing about “the sex”? Was it as hot for you writing it as it was reading it?
LMAO! I showed my husband this question, I asked him how I should answer this. He pointed at his shirtless body and said “Duh, I’m your inspiration.” LMFAO!
The sex scenes were hot but I didn’t expect to get that amount of feedback about them! I thought the scenes were plain compared to other hot, steamy books I’ve read. I wanted Marcus to be aggressive in the bedroom…because seriously, what woman wouldn’t want their man aggressive and controlling in the bedroom? And yes, I have to admit it was hot for me as well while writing the few scenes, because I actually picture the entire action while writing it. LOL. 😉
What do you do when you’re not writing?
I work full time as a paralegal for a midsize law firm. When I’m not working or writing, I’m hanging out with family and friends. I like to drink, dance, read, and bug my husband and everyone else with my goofiness, only when I’m in a goofy talkative mood…which is pretty much a lot. 😉 You’ll catch me on Facebook A LOT! I’m learning how to Tweet! So I have been on Twitter more often lately. I refuse to begin a Pinterest account, because I think my husband will divorce me if I get addicted to another network! Hehehe!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

TEASER 2 of Cautious: Marcus’ POV
Warning: This is an unedited version and the below teaser contains bad language. Thank you.
We all hang around in the VIP room waiting for Lou to arrive. No one said a word as we all wonder the reasoning the meeting was called for. Lou never asked to meet with all of us at once, unless it’s something of its upmost importance. I grab myself a drink and realize that the ice machine is broken. After making a phone call to one of the maintenance men, I down my drink.
As I pour myself another one drink, Lou walked in with his nephew, Giovanni Sorrento. I haven’t seen Gio in years, last I heard of him he put a hit on a cop and then left town. He’s now back out of the blue…that means Lou is up to no good.
Lou makes his rounds of acknowledgements while Gio made his way towards me. He looked exactly the same, a younger version of Lou. Since Lou never had children of his own, he always took care of his nephew as if he was his own son. Anyone that fucked with Gio was taken care of, no questions asked.
He reached his hand out to me with a huge grin. “Marky! Hey how yah been?” I took his hand and he pulled me in for a quick hug.
“I’m good…how ‘bout you? You back for good or just visiting?”
“Just visiting…I have to take care of a few things then I’ll be out of your way…so I heard you’re settling down, now. When will I be able to meet this woman of yours?”
Buddy walked up beside us and shook Gio’s hand. Then he faced me with a smartass grin. “He keeps her hidden. I have yet to meet her, and it’s more like pussy whooped than settled down.”
“Shut the fuck up Buddy! And you’ll never meet her, anyways.” I make it a point to sound stern.
“What’s wrong Marky? Are yah afraid the minute she sees me she’ll want suck my dick instead of yours?” Buddy asked as he raised his eyebrows.
Every fuckin’ thing around me turned red. One minute I was standing in front of Buddy, the next I gripped him by the neck and started pounding his face against the wooden table. I felt someone try to pull me away, but I continued to smash his face along the surface, blood splattering everywhere.
Finally, I was pulled back and pinned down by Jimmie and Vinnie. “Let me the fuck go, now!” I yelled, wrestling to be free.
Buddy lifted his head from the table and there was blood gushing out of his nose. He cupped his face with his hands. “What the fuck, Marky! I was joking around with you.”
“Yeah, well that will fuckin’ teach yah that I don’t take jokes very lightly.”
Everyone immediately turned their heads toward the direction of the door that just opened. The maintenance man stood by the doorway with six angry men staring at him. “Ah, um, I got a call that something is broken?” His voice was shaky.
“Yeah, his fuckin’ nose!” I point my head at Buddy.
Gio shook his head and stared me up and down laughing. “Well, I can see your temper hasn’t changed.”
