For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.
For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.
This is my first JR read (don’t shun me) and I effing loved it. I could not put it down and the backhanded ways of the Bradford family runs deep. Lane was a detective trying to find all of the answers as he was trying to weave his way out of the web of lies and manipulation all of the spiders in the Easterly mansion kept spinning. Lizzie just wants to avoid being hurt again. And she’s strong, so strong. And independent. I love her!! Edward and Sutton….damn I just want to see more of them. Miss Aurora (momma)- she melts my heart. She’s the heart of the family, the glue. She’s the oxygen pumping the blood through Lane and Edward’s veins. You can see it in how they interact with her. JR allowed us into several characters viewpoints with her writing style so we saw from many angles the depth of the destruction and pain the history of the Bradford family has caused. There are many players involved which had me worried at the beginning, but it was easy to follow and it worked, and flowed, perfectly!! This novel was similar to a puzzle. Trying to find which pieces belonged where, to whom they belonged, who was responsible. I absolutely love books like that. They keep me guessing, everything it’s tied up in a bow. I immensely enjoyed the beginning of this Bourbon Kings series, and can not wait for the next!! Give this a try and find you next book crush!! Rating: 5 stars
The Bourbon Kings is a sweet southern dose of lies, deceit, mystery, intrigue…all the feels and emotion you could ever ask for in a story. JR WARD and her incredible attention to detail is fantastic. So fantastic that I could actually hear the ice cubes chinking in the glass, feel the sweet burn of bourbon as it glides down their throats. You can feel the atmosphere of the Derby as if you yourself are an invited guest.
Fall in love with Lane, his charm, and his southern gentlemanly manners. Fall in love with Samuel T. Hell; you will either fall in love with one of the many cast of characters or fall into hate… so much so that you’ll have the urge to punch something, throw something, or scream in frustration. JR Ward has created some pretty wicked bastards, a nasty bitch, and quite a few witty characters as well. Money, greed, power…makes people do some crazy shit and it’s all written between the covers of The Bourbon Kings.
You will find many a Book Crush in these pages and am looking forward to the next book to see how it all plays out.
